Abstract
In order to examine the effects of social participation on health related quality of life among rural elderly, this study especially focused on testing the differential effects of the types of social activities. Data from the first wave of ¡®Korean Social Life, Health and Aging Project¡¯(KSHAP) panel data was used for analyzing 769 elderly over 60. The results showed that social participation had statistically significant impact on rural elderly¡¯s health related quality of life. Furthermore, the effects were different depending on the types of social participation activities. Participating in religious groups, friendly association groups and community activity groups had statistically significant effects on physical health related quality of life. On the other hand, only one type of social activity, i.e. participating in community activity groups, influenced mental health related quality of life. Implications for paying more attention to elderly¡¯s social participation and for fostering more accessibilities to the social activities in order to improve health related quality of life of the rural elderly were suggested.
